World Book Day Children's campaign

Eleven years ago someone at UNESCO had the idea to celebrate reading and books around the world on the same day. An ambitious plan but one that has done remarkably well. Today, World Book Day is celebrated in over 100 countries around the globe.

World Book Day takes place in the UK and Ireland on 5 March 2009 and features:

• Children's campaign
• Spread the Word
• Quick Reads

Children's campaign

World Book Day gives books to children. All school children get a £1 book token to put towards a book of their choice or buy one of the special World Book Day £1 books.

The aim is to get children exploring the pleasures of books and reading by giving them books of their own. But reading events in libraries, bookshops and schools are essential to this too. Libraries, in particular, are essential to the success of Word Book Day.

Use the children's campaign materials to promote World Book Day and publicise the events and activities you are organising for World Book Day.

Schools will be sent a pack full of ideas and activities, display materials and more information about how to get involved in World Book Day in mid-January 2009. In the pack will be the £1 book tokens for pupils.
